The Pastel de Belém has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 19th century in Lisbon. Its origin is linked to the Jerónimos Monastery, located in the Belém district. At the time, due to the Liberal Revolution of 1820, many monasteries and convents in Portugal were shut down, and monks lost their sources of income. To survive, some monks from the Jerónimos Monastery started selling a pastry made of puff pastry and egg custard, which quickly became popular.

In 1837, the recipe was passed on to a nearby bakery, the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, which still preserves the tradition today. While many places make pastéis de nata, the authentic Pastéis de Belém can only be found at this bakery.

If you ever visit Lisbon, it's worth trying a warm pastel, sprinkled with cinnamon!
